Asbestos safety in council homes

Many homes built before 2000 contain asbestos. If it's in good condition and left undisturbed, it's not a health risk.
Asbestos is a natural material made of tiny fibres. These fibres are usually safely contained in materials like cement or insulation board. They can be released into the air if the material is cut, drilled, broken, or sanded, that's when it becomes dangerous.

How we manage asbestos
We keep a register of asbestos in our properties. When our staff visit your home to carry out repairs, they check the register before doing any work that might disturb walls, floors, or ceilings.
If asbestos needs to be removed, our specialist team will handle it safely.
What we do
- We have an Asbestos Management Plan setting out how we manage asbestos safely.
- We survey properties before upgrades, refurbishment, or demolition.
- Communal areas have been assessed, and any asbestos is regularly re-inspected.
- Where asbestos is found, we record its location and ensure it is safe, if the material is damaged or likely to be disturbed, we will arrange removal or make it safe. If the material is safe to be left where it is, it will be managed in accordance with the asbestos policy.
