Our vision and values

Our Council vision
Kirklees Council's vision is to be a district that combines a strong, sustainable economy with a great quality of life, leading to thriving communities, growing businesses, high prosperity and low inequality, where people enjoy better health throughout their lives.
Our purpose in Homes and Neighbourhoods
We deliver high-quality homes and work in partnership to reduce housing inequality, creating inclusive neighbourhoods where people have happy lives and can prosper.
We invest in our teams and empower them in our shared ambition: providing quality homes, maintaining excellent standards of service, and collaborating to make sure everyone in our neighbourhoods can thrive.
Our values
Our organisation's values guide the way we think and act.
Kindness - We are kind, so that our behaviour makes each other feel included, happy and well. We are authentic, friendly, considerate and appreciative. We “do with, not to”, showing kindness to each other and to our citizens.
Inclusion - We provide equal access to opportunities and resources for everyone. We achieve inclusion by removing barriers, tackling discrimination and prejudice, and empowering people. We value and promote a culture of inclusion and diversity.
Pride - We work with pride to achieve positive outcomes for colleagues, citizens and our places. We have self-respect, integrity and dignity, and take satisfaction from our achievements and those of our colleagues. We are proud of what we do as individuals, together as a council, and together with our citizens and places.
Our principles
The Our Council framework sets out seven principles that guide how we work as an organisation. Here's how Homes and Neighbourhoods applies them.
Focus on customers - We respect tenants and recognise the value of their insights and experiences. Adopting the principle of "nothing about me, without me", we ensure tenants are actively involved in all decisions affecting their lives.
Get the basics right - We focus on optimism, high standards, teamwork and a growth mindset to empower staff and boost productivity. Our optimism enables our teams to consistently deliver quality services and meet challenges for our tenants.
Lives within our means - We ensure transparency and accountability through strong governance, performance reporting, and collaborative planning with tenants and internal and external partners. Our decisions and resource use are guided by evidence, focusing on the needs of our tenants to maximise efficiency and impact.
Is kind, inclusive and proud - We care for our tenants and staff, showing compassion, dignity and respect. We value equality, diversity, inclusion and the importance of lived experience, taking pride in our work, celebrating success and fostering a culture of belonging and togetherness.
Collaborates and connects - We foster a collaborative approach. As a directorate we work as one team, breaking down barriers through internal and external partnerships. By engaging with partners and stakeholders, we ensure clarity of roles and shared understanding to deliver place-based outcomes.
Takes responsibility - We uphold integrity by keeping our promises, clearly defining accountability, and being transparent in our actions and decisions. Tenant scrutiny and feedback are valued as opportunities for learning and enhancing our service.
Listens and responds - We actively listen to tenants, respond thoughtfully, and communicate openly to ensure they are at the heart of our decisions. By adopting a “no wrong front door” approach, we streamline customer journeys so tenants only need to share their story once.
