If your home is bigger than you need, our Homefit Scheme can help you move to a smaller one.

The scheme is free and voluntary. It's open to council and housing association tenants.

The Homefit Scheme

The Homefit Scheme is a free and voluntary scheme designed to help tenants who have more bedrooms than they need and want to move to a smaller, more suitable home. This can be done through Choose 'n' Move or House Exchange.

Why move to a smaller home?

  • you have more bedrooms than you need
  • your garden is too big to manage
  • you want to reduce your household bills
  • having a spare bedroom has reduced your housing benefit
  • you need to move for health or support reasons

You could benefit from downsizing if:

  • your home is too large
  • you have a spare bedroom
  • your garden is too big to look after
  • you would like to cut your household bills
  • having a spare bedroom means your housing benefit has been reduced
  • you need to move for health or support reasons

Who can apply

To qualify you must be one of the following:

  • Council tenants - with one or more spare bedrooms.
  • Housing Association tenants - with two or more spare bedrooms.

How we can help you

If you join the Homefit Scheme, we'll:

  • give you priority on Choose 'n' Move
  • help you bid for suitable properties
  • explain your options, including housing associations, private rentals, and House Exchange
  • support you through the move

Financial help

If you're a council tenant, we can help with moving costs.
