The individual web pages for the respective war memorials within Kirklees Metropolitan Council are the sites that the Council is responsible for in relation to their upkeep and maintenance.

This responsibility was devolved to Local Government from Central Government in the early 1980s and as such the Council has been carrying out this responsibility ever since.

The memorials include brief descriptions which may eventually be described in more detail. The Council would welcome any additional information with regards to the designers, the builders, dedication services / opening ceremonies and by whom, dates and press coverage etc.

The information detailed to date includes the names of all the men and women who lost their lives, and in some cases acknowledges that they served for His Majesty the King and more recently Her Majesty the Queen.

In addition to these there are the plaques and memorials in the respective town halls and libraries of Batley, Cleckheaton, Dewsbury and Huddersfield, all the responsibility of the council.

There are a very large number, estimated to be in the region of another 200 sites, where plaques and memorials exist, in schools, churches, chapels, colleges, village halls, public houses, post offices, police stations, drill halls, sports grounds and working men's clubs.

About war memorials

Most memorials and monuments were created and built after the First World War, which ended on 11th November 1918. The actual date of the formal ending of World War One was on 28th June 1919, with The Treaty of Versailles. This is why certain memorials have the war listed as 1914-1918 and some have it listed as 1914-1919.

These memorials and monuments list the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, not only in World War One and World War Two, but also in the Boer War, the Korean War, the Falklands, and more recent conflicts.
