About school meals

  • Primary schools offer a freshly prepared two-course meal each day for £2.85.
  • Meals are made on-site daily using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients.
  • Each school has an individual menu designed in consultation with the head teacher, pupils and parents.

Health and nutrition

We believe that a healthy, balanced diet is essential for every child. Studies show that children focus better in class when they've had a nutritious lunch.

We're proud to hold the Food for Life Served Here award, which means:

  • 75% of our meals are freshly prepared
  • We use local and seasonal ingredients
  • All eggs are free range
  • Meat is farm assured
  • All fish comes from sustainable sources
  • No undesirable additives or artificial trans fats are used.

We also limit foods high in fat, sugar, and salt like deep-fried items and pastries. Instead, we include healthy options such as:

  • Oily fish
  • Wholegrains
  • Fruit-based desserts
  • A fresh salad bar available daily

All our menus follow the Government's Food-Based Standards, ensuring children get the nutrition they need to thrive.

Special diets/allergies

If your child has any food allergies or special dietary requirements, please speak with the headteacher. They will work closely with our kitchen supervisor to make sure your child's needs are safely met.

Our daily menus also include options for vegetarian and Halal diets.

Seasonal theme days

Kirklees Catering offers a variety of fun themed lunch days for primary schools. It's up to each school to decide if they'd like to take part.

These themes are linked to cultural events and the school curriculum, for example, Chinese New Year.

On these days, we create a special menu designed to be exciting and encourage children to try new and different foods.

Meet Munch the Dragon

Munch is the fun and friendly mascot of Kirklees Catering. All primary schools can invite Munch to visit.

During his visit, Munch might:

  • Lead a fun assembly about healthy eating and staying active
  • Join lunchtime and help serve the day's vegetables

Munch is a big hit with children and helps schools promote healthy lifestyles in a fun and engaging way.

We offer healthy choices like our Sugar Smart initiative: serving reduced sugar desserts.
