Better for transport
We want cars, buses and other vehicles to be able to move in and around Batley more easily, smoothly and safely for everyone. This means changing some road layouts and some of the traffic flow around the town centre.
We're looking at changing Cambridge Street and Market Place to one single-lane, north-bound route.
We're introducing more traffic calming and better crossings from Branch Road to Brunswick Street.
We're making clear and safer cycle routes around the town centre, with new dedicated cycling facilities and hubs.
We're also making walkways wider and creating clear, safe crossings throughout the town centre.
We are considering closing eastern Commercial Street to motorists.
Throughout our blueprint plans, we will make sure all businesses in the town centre still have access to controlled loading areas, including businesses on Commercial Street.
Reflecting the intentions of the project, to make the town centre more pedestrian-friendly, there will be some on-street parking lost to accommodate widening of pavements and closure of the eastern side of Commercial Street.
However, eight of the closest car parks to Commercial Street were surveyed, and the results showed that they would be able to accommodate for the parking spaces lost on Commercial Street.
On a weekday there were a minimum of 72 spaces available in the closest eight car parks. On a Saturday, there were a minimum of 39 spaces available.
Pedestrian links between car parks and Commercial Street will also be improved as part of the scheme to promote parking and walking into the town centre.
No accessible spaces will be lost through the design. As part of plans to realign roads in places and increase pedestrian space, some accessible spaces may be moved, but none will be lost.
