The Colne Valley

Marsden, Slaithwaite, Linthwaite, Golcar and Milnsbridge.

The Colne Valley's rich textile heritage is evident as soon as you arrive. But, don't be fooled, these are thoroughly modern villages, where contemporary wares sit perfectly alongside quirky events, country ales and village stores.

The Colne Valley has an eclectic programme of events including the Marsden Jazz Festival, Marsden Cuckoo Day Festival and biannual Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival.

Outdoors and heritage

The Colne Valley has many reservoirs which are popular for walking, fishing and activities such as sailing.

The National Trust Marsden Moor Estate provides a beautiful backdrop to the Colne Valley villages. From here you can view the landscape through the unique picture frame at Wessenden Moor.

  • The Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath is a nice flat route for families and bikers.

  • Enter the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain at Standedge tunnel visitor centre
  • Long distance walking routes in the area are the national pennine cycle route 68 and the Colne valley circular .

Spark young imaginations at a Colne Valley Museum weekend events or take a ride on a family friendly guided boat trip into the Standedge tunnel visitor centre on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Film and television

A haven for TV drama, the Colne Valley is best known for ITV's Where the Heart Is series filmed mainly in Marsden and Slaithwaite. Filmed in the area too was the BBC's iconic Last of the Summer Wine comedy.

More recently Marsden hosted the BBC 3 zombie drama In the Flesh, and feature film A Monster Calls.
