At the heart of Heckmondwike we're creating a new public square, away from the noise and irritation of traffic. The square is an informal, intimate and versatile place for both visitors and people who live in Heckmondwike to enjoy.

The end goal

New Square is a place where people can relax and enjoy spending time just off the beaten track in Heckmondwike, perfect for people exploring the town centre on foot.

Work will be done to the buildings surrounding the square to create a better, more exciting place for people to visit. Once finished, the space could feature a new library and community building surrounding the public square, and the former bingo hall could be refurbished and reoriented to overlook the main space.

In the meantime

Since our latest improvements New Square already includes a public space with nice seating where people can spend time and socialise, and where more town centre events, like the regular Heckmondwike Farmer's Market, can be held.

It also features colourful murals created by Emmeline North , designed with the help of children at Holy Spirit Primary Academy and Heckmondwike Grammar School . The murals take inspiration from science and the work of local scientist Joseph Priestley, who is famous for discovering oxygen.
