Changes to marriage registration from 4 May 2021

New marriage legislation means that the way a marriage is registered in England and Wales changed from 4 May 2021. You can no longer sign a marriage register or be given a marriage certificate during the ceremony. Instead you will sign a Marriage Schedule. This is a one-page document which contains the details of both people getting married which are needed to register a marriage. This applies to all marriages - both civil and religious.

The Marriage Schedule will be provided by the Superintendent Registrar in the registration district of your marriage and will contain all the details required to complete a marriage registration.

In addition to father details, other details can be recorded, like mother or step-parent.

Each person is still required to give Notice of Marriage and the marriage ceremony remains the same. It is only the way that a marriage is registered that has changed.

Please do not forget that our friendly staff are here to help. We are always happy to answer any questions and support you through the entire process. We want to ensure that your ceremony is personal to you and just how you always imagined it would be!

Dear Denise, Tara and all the team at the Town Hall. Thank you so much for making our wedding so perfect. You were so kind and accommodating, especially helping our nerves! We didn't feel rushed or like one of many weddings. You made us feel so special and at ease and we will always remember you as a special part of our wedding. Thank you for all your hard work and for being so lovely. Love Mr and Mrs Gaye.

Mr and Mrs. Gaye

We just wanted to say a huge thank you for making our ceremony very special indeed. You were always so helpful and professional. Lisa, you made sure Terry didn't marry Elizabeth and somehow, you managed to fit his name on the marriage certificate. We had a perfect day and such an intimate and personal ceremony. Thank you all!

David and Tara officiated at our wedding and I would like to pass on our massive thanks for helping making our day very special. David made the vows simple to follow at a time when nerves are kicking in, which made it much more enjoyable for Debbie and myself

We met with Cathryn on a couple of occasions and from our first meeting Cathryn was extremely helpful, pleasant and very reassuring. On the day of our wedding we were both very nervous but Cathryn again made us feel very relaxed, our ceremony was beautiful and very special to us and our guests
