Whether you've work in care and you're looking for a new challenge or you're looking to forge a career in care for the first time, a helping hand is always useful and that's why we've got plenty of useful practical educational materials for your disposal.
How to get a DBS
For roles in care, you are likely to need a DBS if you are:
- A self employed personal assistant
- A client / family who are employing a personal assistant and would like a DBS on their behalf
Working in Care & DBS Checks
If you're thinking about working in social care-whether as a care worker in residential care, home care, or supported living, or even as a Personal Assistant (PA) or volunteer-one important consideration is the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
A DBS check helps ensure the safety of vulnerable adults by reviewing an individual's criminal record and is a legal requirement for most regulated care roles. If you're applying for a job with a care provider, they will usually arrange the DBS check for you as part of the recruitment process.
If you're becoming a Personal Assistant, or looking to volunteer in a care setting, you may be required to complete a DBS check depending on the role and level of support you'll be providing.
DBS Checks for Personal Assistants
If you're working as a Personal Assistant (PA), having a DBS check might be required -especially if you're providing personal care or working in someone's home. If you're employed directly by the person you support (or their representative), they can request a basic DBS check on your behalf. If you are self-employed, you can apply for a basic DBS check yourself online or at selected Post Office branches that offer identity verification services.
For more in-depth roles, you may need an enhanced DBS check, which must be processed through an umbrella organisation-a registered body that carries out DBS checks on behalf of individuals or small employers.
DBS Online Update Service
Once you've completed a DBS check, you can register for the DBS Online Update Service-a quick and easy way to keep your certificate up to date. This service allows employers (with your consent) to check the status of your DBS certificate online, meaning you won't need to apply for a new check every time you change roles within the same workforce type. It's especially useful if you're working in multiple care settings, becoming a Personal Assistant, or taking on voluntary roles. You'll need to register within 30 days of your DBS certificate being issued, so don't miss the window if you want to take advantage of this time-saving tool.
