We support individuals to access physical activities across Kirklees, including walking, Movement and Games in Chairs (MAGIC) and other physical activities in your community.

We can connect you to other physical activities taking place across Kirklees and key partners like Kirklees Wellness Service

We provide tailored support to help new physical activity groups get set up, as well as supporting the growth and sustainability of existing groups in our communities.

What to expect

We offer free training to any volunteer who would like to deliver walks or MAGIC sessions in their own communities. Training sessions will be delivered across both North and South Kirklees twice a year, with bespoke sessions being offered to larger groups.

All volunteers can access regular check-in appointments with us, and we can help promote the group, signpost to community grants that promote sustainability and help connect to other sessions to develop peer support.

Social walks

  • Our vision: For everyone to have access to a short walk, within easy reach of where they live, helping communities become and stay active.
  • Benefits of walking: Combining walking and nature holds many benefits for our mental and physical health and supports our wellbeing. Walking is a great form of exercise and can boost your mood and reduce anxiety.
  • A walk near you: Find a walk in your community. With lots of different routes and walks planned, there's something suitable for all abilities.
  • Become a walk leader: Join our walk leader training and gain the skills and confidence to lead safe, welcoming and enjoyable walks. Learn how to design suitable routes in your area for different abilities and above all, help people connect.

Movement and Games in Chairs sessions

MAGIC stands for Movement and Games in Chairs and is aimed at people with long-term health conditions and for those with mobility challenges. MAGIC is ideal for people who are living independently and provides opportunities for people to socialise and have fun. Sessions are led by trained volunteers in community centres, libraries, fire stations and churches across Kirklees.

MAGIC training

We offer free training for volunteers who would like to deliver MAGIC in their local community. The training gives volunteers lots of ideas of games to include in a MAGIC class as well as basic health and safety awareness. After training, we will provide support for groups to set up their own MAGIC class.

What to expect

Community Plus offers free training to any volunteer who would like to deliver walks or MAGIC sessions in their own communities. Training sessions will be delivered across both North and South Kirklees twice a year, with bespoke sessions offered to larger groups (10+).

All volunteers can access a Community Connector who offer regular check-in appointments to ensure that any support needed is given in a timely manner. They can help with promoting the group within the community an/or the Community Plus website, signposting to community grants that promote sustainability and help connect to other sessions to develop peer support.
