We've supported around 500 litter-picks in the last 12 months, not including our work within schools across the borough.

If you, your organisation, or your community group wish to organise a litter pick, our Recycling Team may be able to support you. Please contact litterpicking@kirklees.gov.ukto let us know what you're planning and our team can run you through what support is available.

Our teams are here to support you year-round, litter picks can take place at any time. No regular commitment is required, they can be ad-hock, we just need to know when and where in advance so our teams can support you.

If you have any questions, please ask.

What we do in schools

Each year, our Recycling Advisors undertake a number of recycling workshops within schools across the borough. These sessions cover a wide range of recycling and waste information to educate and inspire the next generation, including litter and litter picking. We even run litter-picking sessions with our schools.

How we can help

There are a number of ways that our team can support your litter pick, including providing advice, collecting the litter, and even lending litter pickers, bags, and gloves to groups where resources allow.

What we need from you

For our team to be able to help with your litter pick, they need to be contacted at least one week in advance. This is so that they are able to make arrangements to organise any equipment and collect bagged waste.

We also need to know where you plan to litter pick, e.g. park, highway, or housing estate. This can help us to plan where you should leave the waste for collection.

All waste collected needs to be left in a safe location where it can be collected by one of our vehicles, as soon as possible to avoid it attracting fly-tipping.

If you can, take pictures and send them to us so we can look to promote your good work on our social media or our Recycling Bulletin.

When we can't help

Unfortunately, we cannot use our resources to support litter picking on private land. This waste must be dealt with by the landowner or taken to a local HWRC.

We are unable to collect nitrous oxide canisters. As they require specialist disposal, they need to be collected separately to generate waste.

We are unable to collect fly-tipping in addition to any litter-picked waste, please report fly-tipping using our online form and our Greenspace Action Team will collect this and examine for any evidence so that the appropriate action can be taken to locate those responsible.

All litter picks are undertaken at your own risk. We advise that volunteer groups have appropriate insurance, as Kirklees Council cannot be held liable for any accidents or injuries.
