The Kirklees Transport Strategy sets out the council's vision for a sustainable, safe, and integrated transport system that reflects the needs of our diverse communities.
Our Transport Strategy has been shaped by the people who live, work and travel in Kirklees. It seeks to achieve what they want their communities.

What a strategy is
A transport strategy is a plan for the future. It is not a list of schemes, projects, or works to be completed. It details our current position, challenges we face, and the opportunities we can explore. It outlines our goals, and objectives, and actions needed to achieve them.
Why Kirklees needs a transport strategy
Transport strategy and policy in Kirklees has been directed by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), through the West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan (LTP), but Kirklees, with its unique landscape and communities, needs a specific strategy, designed by the people who live and work here, to bring real change to the district.
This new strategy will support and guide ongoing investments in our transport network, including:
- Developing improved walking, wheeling and cycling routes.
- Delivering new and improved bus networks, bus stations and bus franchising.
- Upgrading the rail network through the Transpennine Route Upgrade and the Penistone Line.
