M606 Chain Bar Roundabout Improvement Scheme
This road improvement scheme is a collaborative project between Kirklees Council and National Highways. Improvements to the route will reduce the build-up of traffic, reduce congestion and accidents, increase model transport options, support economic growth and provide better access to education and employment opportunities.
Diversion and traffic management
For improvements to be carried out as efficiently and safely as possible, some diversion routes and traffic management will be in place. They may change as it progresses, however, diversion routes are sign posted. One of the best ways to keep up to date with traffic management and plan your journey is to use the free national roadworks map . Simply search the name of the roads affected and you can view planned works up to 12 months in advance.
Plans
- Works started in June 2024 and are due to be completed in September 2024
- Adding a lane to the carriageway, increasing the existing carriageway from two lanes to three
- New street lighting
- Upgrading traffic signals
- New footways and safe crossing area for pedestrians
- Cycle lanes added
Benefits
Better access and improved signalling will help reduce journey times and aid traffic flow.
Improved street lighting and pedestrian crossings will make traffic management safer for all users and will result in a safer environment for walking and cycling.
By upgrading the street lighting we will reduce longer term maintenance costs.
Better journey times, improved cycle lanes and signalised crossings make sustainable travel options a realist choice.
An important and heavily used access route into and out of Kirklees, we are creating more opportunities for investment, as well as easier access to more education and employment opportunities.
Progress
Scheme completed and traffic management removed.
From 21 May, British Telecom (BT) will access the area for two weeks and will introduce 24-hour lane closures.
Northen Power Grid laid new cables to support the carriageway widening.
