Situated approximately 1 mile from Huddersfield town centre on the main Wakefield Road (A629).

The museum tells the story of Huddersfield from Archaeological remains through to the Industrial Revolution. Major focuses are the Textile industry of the area and local transport. The ground floor is fully accessible although the first floor can only be accessed via stairs. Baby changing and accessible toilet available.

We have a small refreshments area, selling hot and cold drinks, ice creams and snacks situated within the shop/reception area.

All staff have undergone disability and equality training and we are also members of the VAQAS scheme.

  • Huddersfield rail station is approximately 1 mile away.
  • Huddersfield bus station is approx. 1 mile away. All busses leaving for Wakefield pass the museum - ask the driver for Ravensknowle Park. The museum will be on the opposite side of the road.
  • We do not offer a collection service.

Car parking and arrival

  • Free parking for around 30 vehicles with 6 marked bays for blue badge holders.
  • Car park and drive way to museum have smooth tarmac surfacing. Limited lighting at night.
  • Short walk to main entrance. Bell to alert staff that level access is required which is then to the rear of the building.

Main entrance, reception and ticketing area

  • 4 steps to main entrance with hand rails on either side.
  • Heavy, inwards opening door
  • The museum reception is situated on the ground floor at the main entrance.
  • Level area with wooden flooring.
  • Seating available in cafe space which is in the next gallery area.
  • Split height counter with no screening.
  • Well-lit area with glass skylight, period chandeliers and ceiling spotlights.

Attraction (displays, exhibits etc.)

  • There is seating spotted around the galleries, particularly at interactive activities.
  • Push button activated sounds and interactives and constant or movement activated atmospheric sounds in selected areas.
  • Varying light levels throughout.
  • On the ground floor the floor covering is carpet tile or wood with either steps or a gentle ramp to access the Transport gallery
  • Upstairs flooring varies between galleries from short pile carpets to wood and tiles.

Public toilets

  • Public toilets, including accessible toilet are on the ground floor in the Transport gallery.
  • RADAR key available at the main reception to open access toilet door.
  • Light, outwards opening door 900mm.
  • Wheelchair space to the right of the toilet (when facing).

  • There is a shop with a range of souvenirs and pocket money gifts. This is on the ground floor at the main entrance.

  • The museum is located within the grounds of a public park.
  • The paths are wide and even.
  • There are many seating areas around the park.
