Highway projections

Any object must have the prior approval of our authority and sometimes also requires planning approval. If the projection is classed as significant a licence may be required.

Projections from buildings are usually permitted, subject to certain conditions and officers will advise further on receipt of an application.

As a general guide the projection must be at least 2.5 metres above the surface of the footway and must not come within 600mm of the edge of the carriageway.

The Council may alter these specifications but only in exceptional cases.

The Council may take enforcement action against anyone who erects a highway projection without prior permission and prosecution may also be considered.
