About the site

Warburton Recreation Ground can be found on Warburton in Emley, and is in the Denby Dale Ward of Kirklees. This is the main play area for Emley village and has been prioritised for updating due to its age.

Works have now completed on the refurbished play area!

Project overview

The project at Warburton has been split into two Phases due to the availablity of funding:

Phase 1 works aimed to make the play provision at this site more appealing, and accessible to all age groups, by incorporating natural play with traditional play equipment.

The new design proposed to:

  • Keep the existing path network, but upgrade it and add line markings back in for younger children on bikes
  • Refurbish the main swing-set
  • Provide a series of new pieces of equipment which aim to cater for a wide range of ages and abilities

A public consultation was held on the proposals. The majority of respondents were generally supportive of all of the features proposed in the phase 1 design.

In light of the comments received, some amendments to the designs were made, with the following design agreed to be implemented on site:

Phase 1 works are now complete on site and the play value increased by 145% upon completion!

The team are aware that there are possible other additional funding sources through the planning process (section 106) in the future and so a master plan has also been drawn up for the site which includes future additions to the current provisions. Future work may include expanding the play area and adding peripheral pathways around the site. Expanding play in the site could include more adventurous play equipment for older children, an extension to the footpath which could be used by scooters, and/or static gym equipment. Further consultation will be undertaken prior to the Phase 2 scheme being finalised.
