About the site
Shepley recreation ground is situated within the village of Shepley, within the Kirkburton Ward of Kirklees. The recreation ground is immediately adjacent to Shepley First School.
Project overview
We propose to deliver improvements at Shepley Recreation Ground in several phases, as future funding is anticipated through local development (planning process through section 106). A draft plan has been put together for Phase 1 of the scheme.
Phase 1 - Our draft plan aims to make play provision at the recreation ground more appealing and accessible to all age groups by using a variety of play equipment types and natural play features.
We are in the process of completing phase 1:
- The fencing around the existing play area has been removed to encourage exploration and exercise across the whole area
- The existing multi-play unit and roundabout has been renovated with new safety surfacing
- A new basket swing has been installed and we are now in the final stages of adding a unique double stacking-climbing boulder with climbing net. These items introduce extra challenge and play value to this site for all ages and abilities.
Future phases - (subject to receipt of S106 funding) will aim to add to the provision at the recreation ground, and also refurbish Jos Lane play area, potentially replacing worn equipment and surfacing as required.

Next steps
Report on the findings from feedback received during a public engagement on the proposed changes to Shepley play area, Huddersfield.With the majority of consultees in favour of the proposed improvements we will proceed with the proposals for Phase 1, with a slight amendment to enhance play value by adding a net to the climbing boulder. We have also explored improvements to the existing slide on the multi-play unit which is being refurbished, and the feasibility of including a fence/gate by the car park as part of the first phase of the works.
Additional feedback from the consultation will be used to inform the design for Phase 2 of the scheme once the budget is in place to deliver this additional work.
Phase 1 works are now in construction on site and works expected to complete in Summer 2023!
