About the site

Roberttown Rec is located withing the Liversedge & Gomersal ward of Kirklees. It is a well-used community space with its large open greenspaces and play area. This site has been chosen as the first site within the ward to be reviewed under the Playable Spaces programme. It was chosen due to its age, and it being one of the oldest play areas within Liversedge and Gomersal.

Project overview

An initial design was developed in conjunction with local councillors. The design aims to make the play provision more appealing and accessible to all age groups by using a variety of play equipment types and natural play features.

A public consultation took place with the initial design to gather feedback back from the community - enabling us to meet the community's needs as much as possible. All feedback was analysed and suggestions for improvements to the design incorporated as much as possible before the final design was produced and agreed with local councillors.

The following design will now be implemented on site:

  • The inclusion of natural playable features such as totem poles, balance beams and boulders
  • Maximising the playable landscape with features such as mounds and swales
  • The existing fencing around the play area to be refurbished and retained around the toddler play area
  • The existing bark surfacing to be removed and replaced with grass matting throughout
  • The existing climber to be refurbished
  • Inclusion of timber swing set including a toddler 'cradle' seat and a tango face-to-face seat
  • Inclusion of an accessible roundabout - 'Speed Gyro' or similar
  • Inclusion of a see-saw
  • The existing former skate ramp area to be replaced with sand carpet
  • Inclusion of a spider monkey climber
  • Inclusion of a basket swing

Next steps

The Project Team are now taking steps to appoint a contractor for the construction works. Once a contractor is appointment, a timeframe for the completed works will be shared, however it is anticipated that this will be in 2023.
