New North Road

About the site

The play area on New North Road is located in the Cleckheaton ward of Kirklees. It is a small, local park situated on the open green space which leads down to the Spen Valley Ringway

This site was highlighted as the first play site within the Cleckheaton ward by local councillors to be to be redeveloped within the Playable Spaces programme and works have now completed on the refurbished play area!

Project overview

Together with Ward Councillors we created a new design for the Play Area. The design was created to make the play provision more appealing and accessible to all age groups by using a variety of play equipment types. To maximise the budget and to ensure sustainable use of existing equipment the following was designed and installed:

Full refurbishment of the existing play area:

• Swings, climbing unit, spinner and seesaw
• The old loose bark has been replaced with accessible grass matt safety surfacing
• Refurbished benches, new bins and bike store

In addition new play equipment has been added to expand play across the whole open space with:

• An embankment slide
• A Supernova round-a-about
• Pendulum swing

The play value score of this site increased by 55% upon completion of the redevelopment!
