About the site

The consultation on the design has closed and the Parks Development Team are working through the next phases of the project.Works have now been completed on the play area, the play value has increased by 196%.

May Street Recreation Ground is a community park, located in the Crosland Moor. Kirklees Council has funding to improve this play area as part of the Kirklees Playable Spaces Strategy.

We aim to make the play provision at this site more appealing, and accessible to all age groups, by incorporating natural play with traditional play equipment, ensuring that our communities can enjoy the fantastic opportunities which play can bring.

Play in the outdoors has the potential to have a large and important role in a child's physical, social, and cognitive development, it is also not reserved solely for children and young people. It should be encouraged at all stages of life, with many additional benefits experienced by individuals and communities.

Explanation about information about about the new design

The new design will provide the following:

• Installation of a new Steel Swing Frame with 1 tango seat, 1 toddler seat and 2 flat seats.
• Installation of a new Boulders.
• Installation of a New Multi-unit.
• Installation of new surfacing under the play equipment.
• Installation of a new bitmac pathway with playable line markings to encourage play.
• Existing basket swing to be refurbished and retained.
• Repair the wall to the entrance of the recreation ground.
• Refurbish and retain existing benches.
• Removal of goal post as the area is is boggy and unused.
• Removal of the fencing to open the play area to the wider area.
• Planting of flowering cherry trees.

Officers are in the process of tendering and procuring contractors to complete the play area improvements.
