About the site

Lee Street Play Area can be found on Lee Street in Ravensthorpe and is in the Dewsbury West Ward of Kirklees. It was the first site selected by local councillors to be redeveloped as part of the Playable Spaces programme.

Works have now completed on the new play area!

Project overview

Together with Ward Councillors we created an initial draft plan, with the aim to make the play provision at this site more appealing, and accessible to all age groups incorporating natural play with traditional play equipment.

Community engagement was carried out in 2021 (View the findings report from feedback received.) and responses were positive, with 67% agreeing with the proposals. However, there were some concerns about the proposed number of boulders and picnic benches which could lead to people congregating and antisocial behaviour.

As a result of our consultation the designs were changed and the final play area includes:

  • Reduced number of normal benches positioned away from the houses
  • Reduced number of play boulders.
  • New toddler unit (with slide) and a steel junior climber
  • New mini nest swing and toddler swing

The play value score of this site has nearly quadrupled upon completion of the redevelopment!
