About the site

Haywood Avenue play area can be found at the most southerly end of Haywood Avenue along the path that connects it to Wyvern Avenue, and is in the Lindley Ward of Kirklees. Together with Ward Councillors, we've selected this site for redevelopment as it's one of the oldest play areas in the Lindley ward and is in need of updating.

Works have now completed on the refurbished play area!

Project overview

Together with Ward Councillors, we created an initial draft plan, with the aim to make the play provision at this site more appealing, and accessible to all age groups by incorporating natural play with traditional play equipment.

The proposed changes to the site in the initial design were:

  • Removal of some areas of perimeter fencing to open up access to the play area
  • The addition of a basket swing
  • The addition of new floor markings for play
  • The addition of natural play features (including, tree trunks, beams, stepping logs, boulder bridge, and totem pole)
  • Replacement of safety surfacing under existing play equipment
  • Refurbishment of existing play equipment and fencing (including painting and new seats)
  • Retention of the existing steps
  • The addition of a new picnic bench
  • The retention of open green space to encourage informal play/games

A consultation exercise that took place through November 2021 provided us with feedback on this initial design.

The majority of respondents did not agree with the proposed improvements.

Together with ward councillors, we have therefore provided a secondary draft plan for the renovation of play at Haywood Avenue. The aim of this design is to address as much of the feedback from the initial consultation as practicably possible in a revised design.
