Project overview
Play in the outdoors has the potential to have a large and important role in a child's physical, social and cognitive development, it is also not reserved solely for children and young people - it should be encouraged at all stages of life. We aim to make the play provision at this site more appealing, and accessible to all age groups - ensuring that our communities are able to enjoy the fantastic opportunities which play can bring.
Together with Ward Councillors we've created a new design for the Play Area at Goldington Rec.
The new design includes the introduction of:
- A multiplay unit suitable for ages 2 to 5 years
- A 'whirlibob' unit (rotating play) designed for younger users from 2 to 8 years
- Two flat seat & 2 infant pods swings
- A nest swing which can be used by up to 5 children (aged 6+ through to adult) at one time, either sitting or standing. The swing can be used as a very dynamic piece of equipment or to give a more gentle motion for inclusive play for those less able. The inclusive nest swing seat is designed like bird's nest and enables children of all abilities to swing together
- A play unit with opportunities for climbing, sliding, rotating and swining which is suitable for ages 7+
- A low fun ball game unit suitable for all ages - a ball-chute game suitable for all ages
- New safety surfacing beneath the play equipment (bonded rubber mulch) and the bench area to connect it to the football goal area
- The existing basketball court will be retained, with the pole being repainted and steel net chain added to the hoop
- The existing benches next to the football goal and the basketball court will be cleaned up and painted black
Consultation
A public consultation on the design took place, with positive feedback towards the implementation of the design.

Next steps
After collating and analysing the feedback from public consultation, the design was reviewed by the project team and your local ward councillors. The following design will now be implemented on site and is expected to be complete in Summer 2023.
