About the site

Kirklees Council has funding to improve the play area at Dirker Avenue Recreation Ground, Marsden, Colne Valley ward. The play area can be found on one side of the Colne Valley, separated by canal, railway line and Marsden village centre, with Marsden Park on the opposite side. There is open countryside uphill from the site and a stunning view of Deer Hill opposite.

Project overview

Initial proposals were created in conjunction with your local councillors. The new design aimed to make the play provision more appealing by upgrading the area using a variety of play equipment types and features including renovating certain pieces of existing play equipment and installing some new apparatus. The design also sought to introduce some natural play aspects in the park to add interest and increase the play value of the site.

The initial design was consulted on, and following the feedback received the design was amended to the below:

The following changes to the initial design have been made to ensure that the site is appropriate to the needs of the local community:

  • Swapping the Maple tree for an Apple tree
  • Changing the surfacing from sand carpet to rubber mulch
  • Removing the swale and planting from the design to retain open space used seasonally for winter activities such as sledging
  • Adding more natural play features and making those that were originally in the design slightly more challenging to support a wider age range provision
  • Swapping the embankment slide for a longer slide
  • Adding a circular spinner unit.

Next steps

The revised design is now being developed into a technical drawing for procurement from which a contractor for the works will be appointed for the works on site. More information will be shared here when construction dates are confirmed.
