About the site
Cemetery Walk play area is located within the Almondbury ward of Kirklees. It is a well-used community space with its large open greenspace and play area and a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). This site has been chosen as the first site within the ward to be reviewed under the Playable Spaces programme. It was chosen due to its age, and it being one of the oldest play areas within Almondbury.
The initial design has been developed in conjunction with local councillors. This is a draft design only and we would welcome feedback from the community to enable us to meet the community's needs as much as possible. All feedback will be analysed and suggestions for improvements to the design incorporated as much as possible before the final design is produced. Consultation will be undertaken both with the community as a whole and with key stakeholders.
The first step in the process is to gather feedback from the local community about the proposed design. Based on your comments we will aim to make any amendments to the designs that are practicable. The final designs would then be implemented on site.

An initial design was developed in conjunction with local councillors. The design aims to make the play provision on site more appealing and accessible to all users by using a variety of play features and increasing biodiversity and the sensory experience within the site. The scheme proposes to enhance the existing play area with upgraded play surfacing and repairs to existing play equipment. Additional play features will also be introduced outside of the existing fenced play area to encourage broader use of the site as a whole.
The main design features are:
- Upgraded play surfacing
- A new large timber climbing unit
- An inclusive basket swing
- A new 5-a-side goal end
- A new sculptural feature seating
- Efforts to improve biodiversity within the area through native bulb and tree planting
After engaging with the community on an initial proposal, the design was reviewed alongside the feedback and it was agreed with Local Councillors that the following design would be implemented on site:
Next steps
The Project Team are currently in the process of procuring and appointing a contractor to complete the works on site. A formalised timeline for completion will be available upon contractor appointment.
