About the site

Bywell Road Recreation Ground is in the Dewsbury East Ward of Kirklees. Kirklees Council has funding to improve the open space and play area at Bywell Road Recreation Ground. Initial proposals have been put together in conjunction with your local councillors. The new design aims to make the play provision more appealing and accessible to all age groups by using a variety of play equipment types and features.

Project overview

Play in the outdoors has the potential to have a large and important role in a child's physical, social and cognitive development. It is also not reserved solely for children and young people; it should be encouraged at all stages of life, with many benefits to be experienced by individuals and communities. We aim to make the site at Bywell Rec, and play provision on site more appealing, and accessible to all age groups, by incorporating natural play with traditional play equipment ensuring that our communities are able to enjoy the fantastic opportunities which play can bring.

We proposed to:

These proposals include opening up the pedestrian access to and from the recreation ground from Leeds Road to make it more accessible. As part of this we would install a new bollard to stop unwanted vehicles, such as motorbikes, a new resin bound surface with brick edging, replacing the concrete and wire fence with a railing to allow for increased visibility onto the site and a new bin. We would then mirror the look of this entrance at the entrance to Bywell Road (next to the school), and resurface the path that joins the two entrances with a flexible bound rubber and gravel material. We will be planting new Alder trees and spring flowering bulbs. There is also a new design for the Play area, this includes enlarging the play area and adding in new equipment on to a blue ecomulch safety surfacing please look at the close up design of the play area. In addition to this there will be a new vehicle gate to the larger car park from Leeds Road for maintenance and sports teams, the wall in the car park will be treated to deter people being able to sit and congregate. Finally the bollards along the edge of the car park will be repainted pink to soften the space.
