Home improvements
We will look after improvement works needed on your home. Before doing any work, we will carry out a survey on your home to identify exactly what improvements are needed. We will contact you in advance to advise you of what needs doing, the work we will be undertaking, and when we will carry it out.
'Your Home, Your Place' investment programme
Kirklees Council is investing significantly in improving council homes and neighbourhoods across Kirklees over the next 5 years. As a result, we will be delivering a programme of improvements to council-owned homes and neighbourhoods. This programme will ensure that all properties meet the requirements of the decent homes standard. The programme for 2025/26 is currently being developed and when finalised, further information will be published on the website.
Examples of the kind of works we carry out include:
- Kitchen and bathroom replacements
- Roofing
- Central heating - gas safety work
- Electrical works
- Windows and doors
- Structural works
- Environmental improvements to communal areas, paths and open spaces
- Health and safety compliance work to meet any changes in regulatory standards
- Damp Mould and Condensation (DMC). Kirklees Council has improved the approach to the issues of DMC including the implementation of a new DMC policy.
Contact Homes and Neighbourhoods for more information.
Stock condition surveys
Over the next three years, we will carry out stock condition surveys on all properties. This will help provide a better understanding of the condition of resident's homes and the information will be used to develop future investment programmes. This will help guarantee that properties are maintained to the required standard for the next 30 years. The surveys will be carried out by external contractors who will contact residents on behalf of Kirklees Council to arrange access for the surveys. If you would like any information regarding this, please contact assetmanagement@kirklees.gov.uk.
Resident engagement
Kirklees Council will ensure that residents are at the heart of all the improvement programmes. This will include consultation regarding kitchen types, colours and design. The dedicated team of Quality and Liaison Officers will ensure that residents are fully involved throughout the process to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction. If you would like to speak to a member of the team regarding any improvement works, please contact HN.AssetEnquiries@kirklees.gov. You will receive a response within two working days.
Making your own improvements to your home
If you want to make any improvements to your home (apart from decorating), you must contact Homes and Neighbourhoods first.
We want to make sure that they are safe for you to carry out, they are allowed and that they won't put yourself or others at risk.
You may want to decorate your property. If you do, we will make sure any work to walls, ceilings or internal joinery is undertaken so you can do this.
We will fill holes in plaster, but any minor holes of cracks caused by picture hooks, pinholes or wall plugs are your responsibility.
Repairs
While we will look after maintenance and repairs to your home, we do ask that you keep the property in good order and report any issues or repairs to us so that we can fix them for you.
If you need to report a repair please report it online: Report a repair .
