Bin stickers

Stop! You contaminated your green bin

Do you have a sticker on your bin indicating that it contains contaminants? Don't worry it is an easy fix!

Next steps

If our crews find contaminants in your bin, it will not be emptied. You will need to remove the item(s) and put your bin out on your usual collection day. On your next collection day, your green bin will be checked by the collection team.

Your local advisor will also attempt to visit your property, to talk you through what can and can't be placed in your green bin.

If you contaminate your bin on 3 or more separate occasions the Council will withdraw your recycling collection service and remove all bins. In these cases you will be expected to place all your waste in your grey bin which will continue to be emptied fortnightly. Green bins may be returned and the service reinstated after 6 months. You can order a replacement bin after this time period. You will be charged for the return of your bin.

Repeated contamination

Repeated contamination will result in your green bin collection service being withdrawn

What goes in your green bin

Green bins tells you what you can put in your green bin. All items must be loose (not in bags) and clean and dry (e.g. food tins must be rinsed out)

Why contamination is a problem

Unfortunately, too many green bins across Kirklees have the wrong items (called contaminants) placed in them. When this happens a full wagon load of recycling may be rejected and cannot be recycled.

Last year, 3,162 tonnes of recycling collected from green bins was rejected due to being too contaminated to recycle, costing the council an additional £292k - money that could have been better spent elsewhere.

Green bins with wrong items will not be emptied and will receive a sticker to inform of the contamination. Your green bin will not be collected if it has any of these items placed in it:

  • Nappies
  • Glass
  • Food waste
  • Garden Waste
  • Bagged waste

Bins and recycling - what goes where tells you which bin to put things in.

If in doubt, leave it out.
