The importance of leisure to individuals is steadily rising, as Kirklees communities look for more experiences and entertainment, our high streets and town centres need to fulfil these needs and deliver creative and cultural leisure options.

Investing in Dewsbury's leisure offering will create social benefit to the community. We want to engage with community organisations and residents and encourage interaction with hard-to-reach groups.

The story so far

Dewsbury Town Hall

The Town Hall has been improved with the Victoria Concert Hall, the recently opened Victoria Bar, and a wide range of ornate rooms offering a range of opportunities for leisure activities - from traditional concerts and tea dances to pop-up cinema, children's events, and activities and, of course, weddings and other celebrations. We will continue to invest in our heritage buildings, like Dewsbury Town Hall, to make sure they can be enjoyed by people for generations to come.

Dewsbury library

In February 2022, the entrance area to the library was given a much-needed makeover. New paving and lighting have been added which makes the space much more inviting. New street furniture in vibrant green gives it a facelift as well as providing the opportunity for people to take time out from a busy day or socialise with friends. New planting and library signage have also helped to bring the space up to date.

The new, inviting space also means that the library can host events or activities in the future.

The work is part of the Dewsbury Better Spaces strategy which aims to create a series of spaces that link through the town.

Whether you want a comfortable place to sit and have a chat or read a book this space is now more practical and easily accessible.

Dewsbury town park

Dewsbury is wonderfully diverse, and we want to celebrate this. It is important that the spaces we create are welcoming to people from all backgrounds, so everyone can enjoy spending their free time in our town centres.

We have done two stages of public consultation to find out what you think of our plans for the Dewsbury town park. The information from these consultations is being used to further refine the design plans.
