School crossing patrols
Each day our School Crossing Patrols help thousands of children to cross the road safely on their way to and from school. The service is run by the Council's Road Safety Team.

- Hours of work can vary at each school crossing patrol site
- Patrols work from as little as five hours up to 10 hours per week when the children are going to and from school
Helping children get to school safely
Although local authorities are not required by law to provide this service, we recognise the role that our school crossing patrols play in supporting pupils to travel to and from school safely.
Parent responsibility
Parents and guardians remain responsible for making sure their child is safe on their journey to and from school, even when a school crossing patrol is provided. While every effort is made to staff each site during the school term, cover cannot be guaranteed.
Legal powers
It is an offence under the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984 for a driver to fail to stop for a school crossing patrol wearing the official uniform and displaying the patrol stop sign. It is also an offence for a driver to move off whilst the school crossing patrol is still on the road.
The school crossing patrols were given extended powers by the Transport (Scotland) Act 2001, meaning that patrollers can now stop traffic to help adults cross the road, as well as children going to and from school.
