What to expect

Unlike the Tour de France where the entire route was closed to all traffic, the Tour de Yorkshire cyclists are escorted by the Police in a rolling road closure, where Police motorcycles ride ahead of the group and direct traffic to stop to allow the cyclists to pass. This means that the vast majority of the route is only closed for a matter of minutes while the cyclists pass by.

In Kirklees, Welcome to Yorkshire has asked the council to close some roads which have junctions with Westgate and Moorside in Cleckheaton from 12pm until 5pm, and Birstall town centre from 10.00am until 5pm for safety reasons.

If you need to travel on the roads in the area of the race on 30 April, please plan ahead to avoid the race, and allow extra time for your journey.

Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) for road closures and parking restrictions

This is the legal order used to apply for all closures and parking restrictions. It's longer than the 2 lists above, because it also includes the roads on the route affected by the rolling road closure.

We set out a broad period of time in the legal order, during which we can operate closures and restrictions, either for all or for only some of the time during that period.

Rolling road closures will last between 10 and 40 minutes.

Parking restrictions

Parking restrictions operate from their start time until after the last race vehicle has passed.

We are not aware that Welcome to Yorkshire have made any alternative parking provision for residents affected by temporary restrictions. Our advice is therefore to move your car to a nearby street or drive in plenty of time.

Emergency services and care

All emergency services will operate as normal during the Tour de Yorkshire.

The council has also written to all care homes and care providers to make them aware of the race and the impact it may have on daily business. If you or a friend or relative receives care at home, and are worried about how the race might affect your visits, please contact your care provider direct.

Tour de Yorkshire Sportive for amateur riders

In addition to the professional race, amateur riders will be riding in a Sportive race much earlier in the day. Organisers tell us that they are expecting around 5,000 riders to take part, who will be setting off in groups of 80 every 4 minutes.

Sportive cyclists ride under the normal rules of the road and not within a rolling road closure, which means they must obey signs and junctions and have regard for other road users.

We expect riders will enter Kirklees from 7am at Hade Edge and proceed through Holmfirth, Honley, Farnley Tyas, Highburton and Emley with the last riders heading into Barnsley around 1.30pm.
