Births, deaths, and marriages

After your ceremony

Once the legal marriage or civil partnership has taken place, you can use our online form to order a copy of a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate.

Each certificate costs £11.

Correct a registration error

If you notice a mistake on your certificate after your ceremony, you can apply for a correction. The correction will need approval and be undertaken by the General Register Office before the Registrar can issue new certificates.

It costs £90 to apply for a correction. If you wish to purchase a copy of the certificate after correction it costs £11 per copy.

You need to;

  • Contact us in the first instance as it is possible that the mistake is only on the marriage certificate. We can check if the details on the marriage schedule are correct, and the mistake was made when inputting the details into the electronic register.
  • If the mistake is in the electronic register you will need to fill in the application form to correct a marriage or civil partnership registration . Documentary evidence showing the correct information will need to be produced in order for the correction to be authorised and you will need to return any certificates you previously purchased for destruction.

Changing your last name

Once you are married or have formed a civil partnership you may take your partner's surname or vice versa, you can double-barrel surnames, with or without a hyphen, in whichever order you prefer. All you need to do is send a copy of your marriage/civil partnership certificate to all relevant authorities, such as the DVLA, and your bank.

Check if the organisation you are contacting requires the original certificate or will accept a copy. You will also need to apply for a new passport: if you want to book your honeymoon tickets in your new name, you can apply in advance for a new passport. You can find more information on how to apply for Passports for newlyweds and civil partners . A deed poll is only required if you are seeking to create a new surname or adding or removing a middle name.

Re-registration of a child

If you and your partner have married or formed a civil partnership after your child was born, you are legally required to re-register the birth. The birth record will then show your son or daughter to be a child of the marriage or civil partnership.

After you have sent the form

We will contact you for an appointment if the details you have provided are satisfactory. Only one parent needs to attend the appointment with the documents as outlined on the form.

Please note: If your marriage took place outside the UK then your application will need to be referred to the General Register Office, therefore you should advise us of this before booking an appointment, as the appointment cannot go ahead without the approval of the GRO.

At the appointment to re-register you can purchase a new birth certificate. It is free to re-register a birth. However, if you wish to purchase a copy of the new birth certificate, it costs £11 per copy.

Convert a civil partnership into a marriage

Any same-sex couple who are in a civil partnership are able to convert their relationship to a marriage if they choose to. You cannot convert an opposite-sex civil partnership to a marriage in England and Wales. You'll need to sign a 'conversion into marriage' declaration, in person, at a register office and you also have the option to book a ceremony.
