Photo ID at pollings stations

From Thursday 4 May 2023 you will have to show an official form of photo ID when you attend a polling station to vote.

There are two types of electoral register.

The electoral register (full register)

When you register to vote, your name goes on the electoral register, which is a list of people eligible to vote.

This is a securely held list of names and addresses. It is used for limited purposes specified in law, such as: elections, detecting crime (e.g. fraud) and checking credit applications.

The register is available for public viewing at:

The open register

This is an extract of the electoral register.

It can be sold to anyone on request such as businesses and charities to confirm name and address details. Your name will be included in the open register unless you ask for it to be removed.

When you register to vote, you are given the option to opt in or out before your name is added to the electoral register.

Removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote.
