The Zero Waste Community Grant is a brand new pot of grant funding available in 2024 which will provide funds of up to £1,000 to local community groups and small businesses for waste reduction initiatives.

Aims of the Zero Waste Community Grant

  • Meet the 2021-30 Kirklees Resources and Waste Strategy pledge to develop and introduce a community reward scheme that gives back to communities and is for the benefit of the local economy, environment, and wellbeing. Find out more at Resources and Waste Strategy 2021-2030
  • Create a partnership of support that encourages communities and businesses to develop or expand initiatives that reduce waste and add to a more sustainable and circular economy.
  • Help to deliver the Council's ambition to achieve a clean, green, sustainable future for Kirklees.

What can the Zero Waste Community Grant fund?

The grant is a one-off payment that aims to support initiatives that have an identifiable and demonstratable outcome and that focus on the following types of activities:

  • Recycling
  • Reuse
  • Repair
  • Waste minimisation
  • Promoting a circular economy

The grant can be used to help set up new projects, schemes and initiatives; or it can be used to expand existing projects, schemes and initiatives.

The grant can help with these types of costs:

  • Capital item purchases
  • Room or venue hire
  • Facilitator or project-related sessional worker costs (where they are linked 100% to the funded activity)
  • Equipment hire
  • Other one-off costs to help with your endeavour

The Zero Waste Community Grant cannot fund

  • Staff salaries (unless you can demonstrate that staff time is grant-specific)
  • Schools
  • Political or religious activity or promotion.
  • Political organisations
  • Costs that have already been paid for
  • Ongoing rents
  • Ongoing general costs

Who can apply

  • Kirklees-based community groups and voluntary organisations
  • Registered charities and community interest companies
  • Small businesses that are located within and serve a Kirklees community. These should have under 10 FTE (full-time employed) staff and a turnover of less than £1million per annum.

Please note:

  • Community groups and organisations must be constituted, have a set of rules and a bank account in the organisation or project's name; not a personal or individual bank account.
  • Small businesses must be legally trading and have a community engagement aspect. They must have shareable accounts.
  • All applicants will be asked to share risk or insurance documents and their understanding of the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults if these are relevant to the grant funding.
  • If your group does not have a bank account and would be willing to work with another organisation that can handle money for you, please state this on your application form.
  • You will be asked to provide all receipts upon request to evidence grant spend.

How much funding is available each year?

The grant funding for 2024 is from a fixed pot of £5000.00.

How much funding can groups apply for at one time?

  • Applicants can apply for any amount up to £1,000.
  • The funding will be provided as a full award of 100% of the agreed amount.

Application period

Applications can be made from 8th April to the 20th May 2024. The awarding period will take place during July 2024.

The grant award must be spent within 12 months of receipt of funds.
