About the site

Marten Drive is located within the Crosland Moor & Netherton ward of Kirklees and was the first site selected by local councillors to be redeveloped as part of the Playable Spaces programme.

Works have now completed on the new play area!

Project overview

Together with Ward Councillors we created an initial draft plan, with the aim to make the play provision at this site more appealing, and accessible to all age groups by focusing on natural play with some traditional play equipment added at a later stage.

A consultation exercise took place to find out what the local community thought of the plans.

View the Report on the findings from feedback received during a public engagement on the proposed changes to Marten Drive Play Area, Netherton.

The majority of respondents did not agree with the proposed improvements. Therefore, together with ward councillors we created new design based on the feedback received.

The new design includes:-

  • An embankment slide from a lookout turret tower at the top of a play mound
  • Balance beam and stepping logs
  • Monkey bars
  • Swings, including a toddler swing and an inclusive boat seat
  • A picnic bench along with an additional new bench and bin
  • An avenue of cherry and maple trees

The play value score of this site increased by 80% upon completion of the redevelopment!
