About the site

Jaggar Lane recreation ground and People's Park are both in Honley village, within the Holme Valley North Ward of Kirklees. They have been prioritised for updating due to their age and existing condition.

Works have now completed on the refurbished play areas!

Phase 1 works are now complete at both sites, with the play value of each site increasing as below:

Project overview

A draft plan has been put together for improvements at both parks, aiming to make play provision in Honley as a whole more appealing and accessible to all age groups by using a variety of play equipment types and natural play features. Improvements for the two parks have been designed to be complimentary owing to their close proximity.

At Honley People's Park we proposed to:

  • Retain existing fencing around the side of the playground nearest to the exit, but remove the rest of the fencing to enable more integrated play with the surrounding natural features
  • Retain and refurbish the existing multi-play unit
  • Introduce a new inclusive roundabout, accessible to children and young people of all abilities
  • Introduce additional equipment including a single point nests swing in the grassed area beyond the bushes
  • Open up a route between the existing playground footprint and the new swing, but retain most of the bushes for play

At Jaggar Lane Recreation Ground we proposed to:

  • Remove fencing around the individual play areas and integrate toddler and junior play to allow families to play together
  • Introduce mounding in between the playground and the football area to provide separation and add natural play value
  • Retain and refurbish the existing toddler multi-play unit, which is in good condition
  • Introduce a number of pieces of new equipment aimed at a broad range of ages and abilities
  • Resurface the entire area in a combination of rubber mulch and grass safety matting to enhance accessibility but retain variety
  • Retain and refurbish the teen shelter, and introduce a tarmac hardstanding area adjacent with additional informal seating
  • Introduce some additional ornamental tree planting

Design feedback consultation report

The majority of the feedback received was supportive of the proposals however there were some suggestions for how they could better meet local needs.

These suggestions were assimilated into a set of recommendations for design amendments which were then assessed for feasibility by the designer, as follows:

Final Phase 1 drawings

Any Phase 2 improvements would be subject to further funding. Potential Phase 2 improvements are shown below however further engagement will be undertaken with the community when funding becomes available for future work.
