About the site

Battye Street play area can be found on Battye Street, Eastborough and is in the Dewsbury East Ward of Kirklees. Together with Ward Councillors, we selected this site to be redeveloped as part of the Playable Spaces programme as it's one of the oldest play areas in the area.

Works have now completed on the new play area!

Project overview

Together with Ward Councillors, we created a draft plan, with the aim to make the play provision at this site more appealing, and accessible to all age groups, by incorporating natural play with traditional play equipment.

The new design includes:

  • Refurbishment of the existing climbing unit
  • New mini nest swing, giants comb balance beam, wobble board and a spring board
  • Natural elements with sensory planting, natural boulders for climbing and weave posts
  • A wiggly retaining wall that weaves through the site which can be used as a balancing walkway and informal seating

Following a positive public engagement the plan was implemented and the play value score of this site has more than doubled upon completion of the redevelopment!
