Before starting any work where Building regulations approval is required, you must ensure that the following applications are in place:

  • Building Control approval with full plans - suitable for all building work
  • Building notice - suitable for minor works (small domestic work only)

If the works have already commenced or are completed then you will need to submit the following applications:

  • Regularisation - retrospective application
  • Initial notice reversion - work that belonged to a registered Building Control approver (formerly known as 'approved inspections')
Planning approval

Please note that the granting of a building application approval does not imply that any permission required under the Town and Country Planning Act has been granted, you may need both. Find out when you need planning permission .

Application of a higher-risk building

A higher-risk building is a building that is at least:

  • 7 storeys or is at least 18 metres high (measured to the top floor)

and

  • 2 residential units or is a hospital or care home

If your work relates to a higher-risk building or a stage of higher-risk building work or for work to existing higher-risk buildings. Kirklees Building Control will be unable to undertake the work and an application will need to be made to the building safety regulator.
