More information on what we're doing

For us, everything starts with the citizen. By taking part in Democracy Seekers, you’ll be helping to improve our democratic information so that everyone can get involved in local democracy more easily. We want to make sure that you can have meaningful input into how our local democracy works. So we are organising Democracy Seekers gatherings when there is a specific task or activity for us to collaborate on. We’ll also offer the option for citizens to take part online.

You can sign up to be a Democracy Seeker at any time - and we'll get in touch with you when there's a specific task or activity to participate in.

What happened?

Our Democracy Seekers task for October 2019 was all about councillors, with a focus on how we can make it easier for citizens to find out what our councillors do. We hosted an informal Democracy Seekers gathering on Wednesday 2nd October 2019 at The Media Centre in Huddersfield. We also created a Democracy Seekers online task about what councillors do.

We asked:

What do you want and expect from your councillor?
How do you find out what your councillors do?
And how could councillors make better use of digital tools to connect with us?

We learned that people want to know the basics about who councillors are and what they do. Timely information matters to our citizens. The profile of councillors in their wards really matters. It’s also important for us to choose the right tools for connecting citizens and councillors. Participants told us about lots of different online and offline communications methods that they find useful.

What difference did the work make?

What we learned in our “What do councillors do?” task has helped to inform our new role profile for Kirklees Councillors, and is informing ongoing work to help citizens and councillors use digital tools to connect.
