Honley Conservation Area Appraisal

What we're doing

Kirklees Council are producing a conservation area appraisal for the Honley Conservation Area. Appraisals help the Council, local community, and developers to preserve the special character of conservation areas. The document will describe its character and condition as well as identifying issues and opportunities for enhancement. Your local knowledge of the area is needed to ensure the appraisal is accurate and reflects the views of the local community.

More information on what we're doing

We have commissioned experienced town planning consultants Alan Baxter Ltd to prepare the draft Honley Conservation Area Appraisal for us. They will be making visits to Honley with officers from the Council to survey the character of the conservation area. Once a draft appraisal has been produced, we will make it available on this webpage and seek your comments on the character of the conservation area, its future management and the design and accessibility of the draft appraisal document.

A conservation area appraisal outlines the history of an area and explains what makes it special. It identifies the elements that make up the character and special interest of the area, and those that detract from it, and provides recommendations for the area’s future management. This may include recommendation for the changes to its boundaries, where appropriate.

Once the Honley Conservation Area Appraisal is complete, Kirklees Council may then change the boundary of the conservation area and produce a Conservation Area Management Plan including proposals for its future management. This may include changes to when you need to obtain planning permission for alterations to your property. We will hold a public meeting either online or in person (when it is safe to do so) to seek the views of people affected by the proposed changes.

This work supports Kirklees Council’s legal duty, under section 71 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, to prepare proposals for the preservation and enhancement of conservation areas and to consult the public about those proposals.
