Long COVID

Most people will make a full recovery after contracting coronavirus but for some, COVID-19 will have serious long-term effects. You may not know it, but you could have one of many symptoms of what is known as Long COVID or Post-COVID Syndrome.

Symptoms

There are many symptoms of Long COVID. They can affect all parts of the body, not just the respiratory system. Some of the possible symptoms are:

  • Fatigue, muscle deconditioning and weakness
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Ongoing breathing difficulties
  • Loss of stamina
  • Difficulty formulating words
  • Visual disturbances
  • Numbness or weakness
  • Increased agitation, impulsivity and disinhibition
  • Loss of self confidence
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Sleep disturbances, insomnia and nightmares

Where to find help

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms please contact your GP. They can send you for tests to rule out any underlying health condition.

If you are still having symptoms after this, you may be referred to a Long COVID clinic which will identify services who can offer ongoing advice and support to help manage your symptoms.
