Training and resources
There's a range of free training, information and resources offered by the Kirklees Domestic Abuse Community Engagement Team (KDACET) for members of the community, and professionals. For more information about any of the courses below please contact us at KDACET@kirklees.gov.uk
For: Hair stylists, barbers, and beauty professionals
Duration: 45 minutes online session. Once registered, the training will be sent to you via email for you to complete at your own convenience.
Learning:
- better understand domestic abuse and coercive, controlling behaviour
- recognise signs someone might be experiencing domestic abuse
- learn skills for safe and appropriate enquiry
- discover services and resources so you can confidently sign post the person to get support
On completion you will receive:
- a certificate of participation
- free advice and follow-up support
- resources for your salon to let clients know it's a safe place to talk
For: Community groups, community members, professionals
Duration: One-hour briefing session - regular sessions available or we can come to you to deliver the informal briefing.
Learning:
- an introduction to domestic abuse, the definition, different types and who can be affected by domestic abuse
- the indicators that someone may be experiencing domestic abuse
- barriers to accessing support
- how to help someone experiencing domestic abuse (including local referral processes)
For: Community groups, community members, professionals
Duration: One-hour briefing session
Learning:
- gain a better understanding of what the orders do, who they are for, and how to apply for them, including Legal Aid and options for victims who aren't eligible for public funding.
- an overview of civil orders available to victims of domestic abuse and their children
- Non-Molestation Orders
- Prohibited Steps Orders
- Child Arrangement Orders
- Occupation Orders
- Domestic Violence Protection Orders
For: Professionals working with older people
Duration: One-hour briefing session
Learning:
- the dynamics and complicating factors linked to domestic abuse in later life
- recognising the indicators and understanding the impact of domestic abuse on older people
- using a collaborative approach to identifying and supporting older victims of domestic abuse
For: Professionals working with families where there is domestic abuse
Duration: Four days
Learning:
- keeping a child safe and together with their non-abusing parent is usually the best way to promote their safety and stability
- develop a "strengths-based partnership" with non-abusing parents
- engage perpetrators and hold them accountable for their behaviour and its impact on their child.
For: Professionals who need to assess stalking in relation to risk
Duration: 1 hour
Learning:
- define stalking in relationship to domestic abuse and the Stalking Protection Act 2019
- explore what makes stalking high risk
- recognise and evidence stalking behaviour
- understand support options including Stalking Protection Orders
For: Professionals who need to assess HBA in relation to risk
Duration: 1 hour
Learning:
- identify honour-based abuse and forced marriage and explain the warning signs, indicators, and triggers
- explore common myths and preconceptions
- build confidence in recognising and challenging honour-based abuse and forced marriage
