Green spaces where people can gather, relax and feel closer to nature deliver a range of health and environmental benefits. We are committed to providing more green spaces in our urban landscapes.

These spaces are becoming much more than a simple a space with a few trees in between shopping streets, they can be a reason in themselves to visit town centres.

Public green space has a positive effect on health, climate, transport, economy, biodiversity, and social cohesion. This impact will ensure that our towns become better places to live and work.

Climate change and consumer demand for sustainable spaces also calls for new solutions to maintain and improve the quality of life in our towns.

The story so far

We declared a climate emergency in 2019. Since then, measures to help reduce our operational emissions and the emissions from Kirklees as a whole, have been introduced as part of phase one.

What's next?

We are still aiming to be Net Zero and Climate Ready by 2038 and are currently working on an action plan to make sure this work continues at pace.

Dewsbury town park

We have done two stages of public consultation to find out what you think of our plans for Dewsbury town park. The information from these consultations is being used to further refine the design plans.
