Through this scheme, you can apply for a grant of between £1,500 and £5,000 to fund early-stage research into the development of a new product or process. Eligibility criteria apply.

The Kirklees Business Support Team will work with you to develop a joint support plan that is bespoke to your requirements. This may include support with business planning, digital transformation, innovation, trading overseas, premises, workforce skills or sustainability.

Our SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) Growth Managers provide free and impartial access to all of the publicly funded business support available in the Leeds City Region. This includes products delivered directly by the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and by its local, regional and national partners.

Support available

Business Growth Fund (LEP Capital Grant)

For capital investment projects (building alterations, new machinery and equipment) that help SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) based in the Leeds City Region, or plan to invest here, grow and create jobs.

  • Projects need to create full time permanent jobs.
  • Grants between £10k to £250k with an intervention rate of 10% or 20%.
  • Fit out maximum £100,000 grant. Applications must be submitted prior to signing lease or purchase of building.
Investment Readiness

Designed to help businesses to understand the full and diverse range of investment options available that can best support their growth and to prepare compelling proposals to secure external finance.

Free support on the programme includes:

  • Funding workshops
  • Peer-to-peer board networks
  • 1-2-1 funding clinics
Connecting Innovation

This encourages more future innovation activity. An effective communications campaign is aimed at developing an innovation culture and appetite for collaboration within the region's SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises).

Revenue grants are available to support the cost of accessing research and development expertise and facilities. Grants between £5k to £100k and up to 50% intervention.

These are to:

  • Develop new products and processes contributing to productivity gains.
  • Increase take up of Innovate UK grants, KTPs, and other national innovation support through offering a simplified and coordinated innovation offer within the Leeds City Region.
  • Encourage new and sustained collaborations with higher education institutes.
Product and Process Innovation (PAPI)

Grants available for SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) in eligible sectors looking to invest in machinery which will allow them to grow through innovation (ie bringing a new product to market).

  • Minimum project cost of £20k.
  • 40% intervention rate, maximum grant of £20k.
  • Projects must create at least 1 FTE (full time employee) job.
Mentoring Growth Programme

A mentoring programme designed to link mentors from large businesses with SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) looking to collaborate with an experienced leader.

  • Businesses looking to grow, enter into new markets, make signification operational or IT investments or change strategic direction.
  • Mentors are selected based on business requirement.
  • Multinational business mentors from the likes Siemens, GSK and John Lewis Partnership. Businesses need to have 10+ FTEs (full time employees) and a T/O of £2million.
KTN - Knowledge Transfer Network

Helping you make a success of your ideas delivers growth for the UK economy. The network helps you:

  • find expertise, markets, funding, finance and facilities.
  • improve your products, processes or business models.

The network supports:

  • UK manufacturing businesses, by making targeted links to the right knowledge, partners, facilities and funding.
  • innovators with the right transition of products into production, by making targeted links to the right knowledge, partners, facilities and funding.
KTP's and MKTP's (Knowledge Transfer Partnership and Management Knowledge Transfer Partnerships)
  • Transfer of knowledge and expertise of the university into a business.
  • Development of innovative solutions to help business grow.
  • Improvement of performance and operations.
  • University staff embedded into business for 12 months to 3 years, supported by academic staff and specialists in their fields.
  • Funding up to 67%. Spend is also eligible for research and development tax credits.

For businesses looking to lower energy usage, reduce water and waste costs and minimise impact on the environment.

  • Free resources or energy efficiency audit worth up to £1,200.
  • 40% funding towards capital investment projects to a maximum £40,000 grant.
  • Free circular economy consultancy of up to 30 days intensive support.
Exporting for Growth

Package of support from the Department of International Trade on how to start or increase exporting.

  • Grants of £2k to £5k are available (50% intervention rate) for businesses on the programme.
Ad-Venture Local Contact

High-growth programme for pre-starts, start-ups and early stage businesses (up to 3 yrs old).

  • Intensive support including mentoring, workshops, peer-to-peer learning and grants.
  • Grants up to £25k dependent on the stage of business. Intervention rate of up to 50%.
Accelerate (Run by Ad-Venture)

A programme of intensive support for start-up ambitious businesses.

  • Accelerate combines 6 online masterclasses with a weekly live webinar to discuss and explore key topics.
  • 15 free hours of mentoring support to help you stabilise your business, implement the changes you need and identify immediate priorities and identify a pathway to bounce back.
Digital Enterprise Programme

Supports SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) investing in digital technology.

  1. Digital Growth Voucher - Maximum project cost of £10k up to 50% intervention rate to assist with projects which look to digitally transform your business - can include hardware and software.
  2. Digital Knowledge Exchange - a programme of up to 12 hours support. This includes workshops, masterclasses, mentoring support and digital audits. It helps businesses improve their understanding of digital technology and the solutions available to help them to develop their business.
  3. Digital Connectivity Voucher - Designed to assist businesses improve their internet connections - up to £3k available, dependent on current broadband speed.
  4. Digital Innovation Voucher - Grants designed to help businesses undergo complete digital transformation - potential for grants in excess of £10k dependent on project.

Supports SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) in the digital and creative sectors only to invest in emerging growth.

  • For digital focused projects
  • Capital investment of £20,000 or above - Grants between £10 to £50k with a maximum intervention of 50%.
  • Projects must create at least one FTE (full time employee) per £12.5k grant working within a digital role and paying real living wage.
Supply Chain Programme

A business support programme delivered by the University of Huddersfield, providing strategic supply chain support to SME's & associated services in the manufacturing sector.

  • Improve business performance, growth & supply chain strategies.
  • Reduce supply chain risk and look at new market opportunities, source alternative suppliers and secure local SME provision.
  • 12 hours free support, business & supply chain management diagnostic, and grants of up to £3k with an intervention rate of 50%.
Manufacturing Recovery Process

Provides a three-stage approach to support, guide and aid in business resilience. A client contact manager will help to produce personalised action plan to help manufacturers get back to 'normality' following the COVID-19 outbreak.

  • Small CapEx grants up to £3k match for investment in equipment that will help manufacturers diversify and recover.
Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)

3 types of funding streams for 'in-scope' businesses:

  • Skills and Trading Fund - Up to £10k skills and training funding for small employers.
  • Flexible Fund - For a project you have identified that meets CITB priorities and addresses industry needs.
  • Structured Fund - For projects where CITB has identified a need for investment.

Supports businesses of all sizes to adopt more sustainable and cost-effective travel.

  • Discounted travel for staff and business journeys, including the corporate M-Card to reduce public transport costs.
  • Specific advice on travel-planning for firms moving within, or to, the region.
Cycle City Connect
  • Support for workplaces to build and embrace a culture of walking.
  • Training for staff to become 'Walk Champions' ambassadors who will lead on walking initiatives.
  • A four-week workplace communications package to inspire staff to make an achievable walking pledge.
