Proposed options for further consultation - Meltham area

View the proposed options from the 2nd phase consultation, which were open for comment 16th February - 8th May

Option 1 - no change to external town council boundaries

Map: Meltham Civil Parish - Option 1: (no change)

Option 2 (our recommended option) - minor boundary changes to polling districts HN5 and HN6 around the Netherton/South Crosland area

  • Meltham Town Council suggest that slight changes are needed to the boundaries around the South Crosland and Netherton area (polling districts HN5 and HN6). These amendments would seem appropriate for these households.
  • This alteration would require a consequent change to Kirklees district ward boundaries. It is estimated this will affect 169 electors (68 from Colne Valley district ward and 101 from Crosland Moor and Netherton district ward). We welcome comments on this proposed change.

Option 1 or 2 would be combined with either Option 3a, 3b or 3c

Option 3a - leaving the town council area unwarded

Our view:
  • It has been suggested that the current, unwarded, arrangements work well.
  • The councillors act collectively in the interests of the area as a whole and communities already feel effectively represented by their councillors.
  • Meltham Town Council would prefer for the parish to remain unwarded.

Option 3b - warding the town council area into 3 wards with the following councillor representation

  • HN5 - 3 councillors
  • HN6 - 4 councillors
  • HN7 - 3 councillors

Option 3c - warding the town council area into 3 wards with the following councillor representation

  • HN5 - 4 councillors
  • HN6 - 5 councillors
  • HN7 - 4 councillors

Map: Meltham Civil Parish - option 3: creation of wards, revised councillor representation and minor boundary changes

Our view:
  • Meltham is the only one of the five town and parish councils in Kirklees which is currently unwarded.
  • The Returning Officer has requested that Kirklees Council considers warding Meltham Town Council, to be based on the three existing polling districts HN5, HN6 and HN7, which are wholly contained within the town council area.
  • These proposals would improve the management of elections within the town council boundary.

If you have any views on potential names for the each of the three proposed wards referred in options 3b and 3c, please let us know.
