Proposed options for further consultation - Denby Dale area
View the proposed options from the 2nd phase consultation, which were open for comment 16th February - 8th May
Option 1 (our recommended option) - no change to the existing parish arrangements
Map: Denby Dale Civil Parish - Option 1 (no change)
Our view:
- The existing boundaries reflect local natural communities and geography, and are based on the former Denby Dale Urban District Council.
- The size of the parish council strikes a good balance between cost and efficiency in the administration of the parish.
- Existing democratic processes are in place for people to stand for election and to represent the interests and identity of their local community on the parish council.
- The size and resources of the current parish council mean it is well placed to further develop its role and impact.
Option 2 - the replacement of the existing Denby Dale Parish Council and the establishment of two new parish councils in its place
- One parish council to be established for Upper and Lower Denby, Birdsedge and High Flatts - by creating a parish comprising the existing parish ward, DD3 and DD4 polling districts (with possible minor boundary alterations). It would comprise 901 electors, and:
- A second parish council consisting of the remainder of the existing Denby Dale Parish Council area. This would comprise 11,350 electors.

Our view:
- The smaller parish may better reflect the identities and interests of local communities.
- However, this option would result in both new parish councils having less income and resources, and probably increase the administration costs. It could limit the work they can do and their impact.
Option 3 - the replacement of the existing Denby Dale Parish Council with six separate parishes comprising:
- Clayton West (DD1) - existing parish ward (2416 electors)
- Emley (DD7, DD8) - existing parish ward (1475 electors)
- Skelmanthorpe (DD9, DD10, DD11) - existing parish ward (4185 electors)
- Denby Dale (DD5) (2274 electors)
- Upper and Lower Cumberworth (DD2, DD6) (1000 electors)
- Upper and Lower Denby, Birdsedge & High Flatts (DD3, DD4) (901 electors)

Our view:
- Smaller parishes may better reflect the identities and interests of local communities and that this in turn, would better engage community spirit and interest.
- However, this option would result in the new parish councils having less income and resources, and probably increase the administration costs. It could limit the work they can do and their impact.
