Councillor David Ridgway

David was born in Sheffield, the youngest of three children and was brought up in Cheshire from the age of 5.

He was educated at Sedbergh School and left at 18 after achieving 8 'O' and 3 'A' levels. He started work in the City in an import/export company dealing in metals, minerals and metal ores.

At 21, he moved to Procter and Gamble, selling soap powders to supermarkets. Four years later joined Carrington Viyella, where after a period working all over Europe, he managed the Australian office in Sydney.

After returning to the UK, David joined Manufacturers Life of Canada for a successful career spanning over 25 years in financial services. He sold his practice in 2004 and ran the Keys restaurant in Huddersfield until 2008 in partnership with his daughter.

David married Karen in 1974 and they have three children.

He was first elected to the Council in 1996, representing the Colne Valley ward, where he has built up an enviable reputation for helping people, promoting the Colne Valley and making the environment a better place to live.

He loves gardening, music, freemasonry and sport – he is an avid Manchester United fan.

David fully appreciates the honour of being elected to the Mayoralty and is looking forward to meeting the many and varied people that make up the Borough of Kirklees.
