Adults and Communities main role is to support communities to be safer, stronger and healthier.
The Adults and Communities Directorate is made up of:
These services work in partnership with other council departments, and various other organisations, including: Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, who manage council housing, health services, the police, services for children and young people, local businesses and voluntary and community groups.
Working together to improve the quality of life for people living or working in Kirklees, we aim to deliver:
- A people-centred approach
- Independence
- Strengthened communities
- Group support
To deliver better, joined up services for residents, using the Kirklees Partnership's Local Area Agreement. - Cost-effective services
- Public consultation
We commission and provide adult social care, which includes services for older people and other adults with a physical disability, learning disability or mental health problem. Our aim is to help people live as independently in their own homes for as long as possible. This can mean helping people carry out daily activities with the support of home care services or home equipment.
We provide residential care for people who need long-term support and rehabilitation services and short-breaks for people and their carers - so they can regain their independence and confidence or take a break from their caring role.
We also provide day care services and support people with learning disabilities by providing realistic employment opportunities, working closely with local employers.
We provide community support to people and voluntary organisations, who wish to make a positive difference and improve their own communities. We do this by offering various services including community grants, and community consultation, engagement and cohesion.
We are also responsible for delivering the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy which aims to narrow the gap between the poorest Kirklees areas and the rest of Kirklees. This work, with community support services is part of creating safer, stronger communities - and aims to help Neighbourhood Renewal areas deal with poor health, low educational attainment, high crime, fear of crime and high unemployment.
Working in partnership with other organisations, such as the police, to make our communities safer by reducing crime, anti-social behaviour and the misuse of drugs and alcohol, we work to reduce the fear of crime and injuries from fire and road accidents.
The delivery of housing services is divided between Kirklees Strategic Housing and Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing Ltd. We work closely with Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing who manage the houses on our behalf. Our aim is to improve housing options, homes and neighbourhoods for people living in Kirklees and to provide cost-effective high-quality housing services.
