Sustainability Appraisal (SA) toolkit
Corporate Development Unit - August 2006
nick.howe@kirklees.gov.uk
What is sustainability appraisal about?
- Sounder plans
- More sustainable plans
- Better decisions
- More sustainable patterns and forms of development
- Good planning!
About this toolkit
The Strategic Environmental Assessment Directive and the Environmental Assessment of Plans and Programme
Regulations both came into effect in 2005 and placed new responsibilities on plan makers in terms of
sustainability. In June 2006 the Government refined its strategy for sustainable development and published
Securing the Future placing further emphasis on sustainable development and promoting good governance whilst living
within environmental limits.
This section provides information and guidance on Sustainability Appraisal (SA), the implications for officers
and elected members and recommendations for the preparation of SA reports.
The council has appointed an SA Co-ordinator to develop, manage and co-ordinate SA across a range of council
services. The co-ordinator will provide additional support and guidance to services carrying out SA and ensure
they are carried out in a robust and transparent manner.
